Fantastic service from ADI

ADI were so quick, efficient and competent. Where other leak detection companies quoted several weeks lead time, ADI booked James to perform trace, access and leak repair the next day. James worked tirelessly in difficult condition to expose and repair the leak. Fantastic service, many thanks

High water bills with no sign of…

High water bills with no sign of leakage inside or out. Contacted ADI Leak Detection and James arrived the following morning. He determined by gas injection into the supply pipe, and acoustics, that the leakage was at the SEW meter chamber. Couldn’t have asked for more in terms of the care of property taken and quick identification of the leak source. Highly recommended.

Did a great job!

We contacted ADI after Thames Water had made three attempts at fixing our main leak - none of which was successful. The engineers, James and Vince, did a great job at detecting the leak and then coming back to fix it a couple of days later. They were really careful with our paving and left everything tidy at the end of the day. We had a bit of an admin glitch which was very efficiently sorted out by Abs - a big thank you Abs for your professionalism.

James arrived ahead of time a very…

James arrived ahead of time a very likeable guy.He got on with the work well, and updated me every hour or so.He knew the leak was under slabs or crazy paving adjoining. However, because plastic insulation was placed below the slabs and also an inch of concrete, it was difficult to detect the exact spot. After digging up a small crazy paving area which proved negative,he then removed 2 big slabs dug down and there was the problem. He then mended the leaking pipe ,tested it and finished the job. I thought he was brilliant at his job.

James provided an excellent service

James was on time, and very thorough. He checked all the obvious possible problems, and then did an extended gas test. He explained what he was doing at each stage. And showed me the faulty pipe joint, hidden under two layers of planking! No way would I have found it! A really excellent service. Many thanks, Nick, Hove.

James came out yesterday on the 26/01/26 to investigate a leak another company couldn’t find. He went above and beyond to locate this leak and recommended a permanent fix. We had a great experience with ADI

We had a great experience with ADI, I called up with a suspected leak in our heating system and was able to get an engineer booked within a week to come look at the problem. James, our engineer, was seriously fantastic. He immediately carried out checks, had a few hypothesis of what could cause the issue and methodically went through the steps to isolate our water and boiler systems to identify the ultimate cause and what repair was needed so that we could take it forward. This issue has been a problem for us for over 7 months now and we’ve had multiple plumbers, boiler technicians, water tank technicians come to have a look at our system to no avail, so it was such a relief to finally have someone knowledgeable enough to identify the root cause of this headache! Thanks very much to James for his help today and support. And on top of identifying the issue itself he also answered a number of questions I had about our heating system in general which I greatly appreciate! Would definitely recommend this company to anyone looking for reliable and prompt service in this field.

About James

James started out in plumbing and heating, spending 8 years working across commercial and domestic systems before specialising in oil fired appliance diagnostics for a further 4 years. That technical foundation gives him a precise understanding of how heating and water supply systems behave when something goes wrong. On a job, he works through the evidence methodically — using the data from his equipment to narrow down a leak location before any unnecessary work is done. It is an approach that tends to reduce disruption for homeowners significantly.

Frequently asked questions about James

What does James specialise in?

James specialises in central heating leak detection, water mains leak detection, underfloor heating leak detection, bathroom leak detection, drain leak investigation, and underground leak detection. He is particularly known for central heating and water mains work, drawing on a strong background in plumbing, heating, and oil fired appliance systems.

How does James detect hidden leaks?

James uses thermal imaging cameras to identify heat or moisture anomalies behind walls and under floors without opening them up. Acoustic listening equipment picks up the sound signature of pressurised leaks within concealed or buried pipes, while tracer gas is used where acoustic methods need confirmation on tightly routed pipework. Borescope cameras and moisture meters support the investigation by providing visual access and quantifying water ingress.

What experience and qualifications does James have?

James has 8 years in plumbing and heating, 4 years in oil fired appliance technical work, and 1 year in leak detection. He holds a Plumbing & Heating NVQ Level 2 and an OFTEC Technician qualification, reflecting his grounding in both heating systems and oil fired appliance diagnostics.

What types of properties does James work on?

James works on domestic homes and commercial properties, covering leak investigations across central heating systems, underfloor heating, water mains, bathroom plumbing, drains, and buried underground pipework. His commercial and domestic plumbing and heating background means he is well-suited to both straightforward residential leaks and more complex system investigations.

When should you call James for leak detection?

If you have unexplained damp patches, rising water bills, a drop in heating system pressure, or warm spots on a floor that may indicate an underfloor heating leak, an investigation is warranted. Call ADI Leak Detection on 0800 731 3843 to book — ADI will aim to assign James where he is available in your area.

How James finds your leak

James follows a consistent five-stage process on every visit. The approach is non-invasive and designed to isolate the fault before any disruption to your property.

  1. Initial assessment. Review symptoms with the customer, check visible evidence, and identify the most likely system involved.
  2. Selection of the right detection method. Pick the combination of thermal imaging, tracer gas, acoustic listening, or moisture mapping most likely to isolate the fault.
  3. Non-invasive testing. Run the chosen method across the candidate area — no excavation or destructive investigation until the leak is confirmed.
  4. Leak confirmation. Cross-verify the finding with a second method where possible, mark the exact location, and document the evidence.
  5. Reporting and next steps. Provide a written report, photographs, and recommended repair options.
