With the internal stopcock closed and the meter still running, the leak was confirmed to be on the underground section of the incoming mains. Acoustic listening equipment was deployed along the pipe route to detect the sound of water escaping under pressure.

By moving the equipment methodically along the surface above the buried pipework, the engineer was able to identify the precise point where the leak signal was strongest and mark the ground for excavation.
