A property in LS22, situated at the top of a steep driveway, was suspected to have a leak on its mains water supply. The external meter and stopcock are located at the bottom of the driveway, with the supply thought to run through a neighbouring garden and track around the perimeter of the gardens before reaching the property.

The issue arose around the same time that large marquees were erected in the neighbouring garden, raising the possibility that ground disturbance had caused damage to the buried pipework.

With the supply running beneath ground shared with a neighbour, pinpointing the leak without causing unnecessary disruption required a structured, non-invasive approach before any excavation could be considered. A water mains leak detection investigation was the appropriate course of action given the unknown pipe route, the depth of the supply, and the shared ground involved.

The suspected leak was on the mains supply serving the property, identified as the middle right meter among those at the boundary. Until the leak point was confirmed and repaired, the supply remained compromised.

Methods Used

The investigation began with acoustic profiling across the neighbouring garden to detect any noise signatures consistent with a pressurised leak. Suspect leak noise was recorded on the hard standing area adjacent to the garden house at the top of the garden, giving an initial area of concern.

Tracer gas was then purged into the pipework and a full sweep of the garden carried out. High gas readings were found emitting from beneath the lawn immediately adjacent to the hard standing — consistent with the acoustic result.

A technique combining tracer gas with the mains supply was then used, producing an audible leak noise in the same area, which confirmed the leak location before any ground was broken.

This layered approach — acoustic correlation followed by tracer gas, then gas-and-water confirmation — is standard practice in water mains leak detection where the pipe route is partially unknown and access to the ground is restricted. Each method independently pointed to the same location, giving a high degree of confidence before excavation was approved.

Investigation Process

    On arrival, engineers were briefed on the suspected mains leak. The supply serving the property was identified as the middle right meter at the external meter point.

    A pressure test was carried out at 4 bar using tracer gas. No loss of pressure confirmed the repaired supply was sound.

    The excavation was backfilled. The area will require time to settle before being professionally made good.

The leak was located beneath the lawn in the neighbouring garden, adjacent to the hard standing area of the garden house at the top of the garden. On excavation, a puncture hole was found in the mains supply pipe, which had been running beneath both electric cables and a gas supply.

The damaged section was removed and repaired using a specialist 27–34mm transition coupling. Following the repair, a pressure test at 4 bar showed no pressure loss, confirming the supply is now sound. The excavation has been backfilled and will need time to settle before the surface is made good professionally.
