Water mains leak detection was required to establish whether the source was the mains supply feeding the building and, if so, to pinpoint the exact location. There were two external supply chambers at the front of the pub, adding complexity to isolating which supply line was involved before any investigation inside could begin.

Key Symptom
The mat at the door threshold was saturated and a copper pipe was visibly entering the ground at the wet area, with acoustic anomalies detected from that pipe until the internal stopcock was closed.

Methods Used

With the leak confirmed on that supply line, permission was granted to expose the ground at the affected area. This physical excavation allowed the engineer to directly inspect the pipe condition and the surrounding construction — a step that proved critical in understanding not just where the leak was, but how the damage had occurred.

Acoustic Correlation. Used at the copper pipe entering the ground at the door threshold, detecting an anomaly that disappeared when the internal stopcock on that supply line was closed, confirming the leak location.

Visual Inspection. Used throughout — to assess the wet floor and saturated mat, inspect the external chambers, identify condensation on the pipes at the stopcock panel, and examine the exposed ground to locate the squashed and holed section of copper pipe.

Sectional Isolation. The plastic external chamber meter was checked for movement and shut off, and the internal stopcock was unseized and closed, allowing each section of the supply to be individually eliminated or confirmed as the source.

Investigation Process

    External chambers checked

    Two supply chambers were identified outside the front of the pub. The plastic chamber was accessible, contained a meter, showed no movement, and was shut off — confirming it fed only the right-hand toilets and basin. The steel chamber could not be opened.

    Wet area and pipe identified inside

    Inside the pub, water was visible on the floor at the door threshold. The mat was lifted and found to be heavily saturated underneath. A copper pipe was observed entering the ground at this point.

    Acoustic anomaly detected

    Acoustic correlation equipment was applied at the copper pipe entering the ground, and a clear anomaly was detected from that pipe.

    Internal stopcock located and unseized

    The access panel on the outside wall for the internal stopcock was unscrewed to gain access. The stopcock had seized and had to be freed before it could be operated.

    Stopcock closed — anomaly confirmed

    Once the internal stopcock was closed on that supply line, the acoustic anomalies disappeared, confirming this pipe as the source of the leak.

    Ground exposed

    With permission, the ground at the threshold was excavated. The area was found to be very wet, and the surrounding construction was immediately notable — there was no pipe protection and a very hard concrete mix had been used around the pipe.

    Damage and cause identified

    A clay-coloured plastic drain was visible in the left corner. The pipe had been damaged — a squashed section and a hole were found. Evidence suggested past drain work had caused the damage, with a plastic bag used in an attempt at protection before a hard floor mix was poured, which had further compressed and damaged the copper pipe.

    Temporary repair carried out

    Because the area would flood if the mains were turned back on without a repair, a temporary repair was completed using plastic fittings and pipework, with the repaired section sleeved in plastic ducting to protect it. Water was restored to the bar the same day.
