Methods Used

The investigation used a two-stage approach to progressively narrow down the location of the water escape. Acoustic equipment was applied first, identifying a strong reading in the middle of the driveway.

The tracer gas supply was then connected and a tracer gas test was carried out, which corroborated the acoustic findings and confirmed tracer gas escaping in the same area.

This layered method combining acoustic correlation with tracer gas is standard practice in underground leak detection, and mirrors the approach used in water mains leak detection where confirmation from more than one method reduces the risk of unnecessary excavation. Once both methods pointed to the same location, the block paving was lifted and the area excavated to expose the pipework and visually confirm the leak.

Tracer Gas. With the gas supply reconnected, tracer gas was introduced to the system and detected at the surface, confirming the escape in the area already flagged by the acoustic equipment.

Visual Inspection. Following excavation of the block paving and underlying ground, a direct visual inspection confirmed a visible leak on the exposed 20mm metal pipe.

The tracer gas escape was located beneath the middle of the driveway, where a 20mm metal pipe was found to be leaking. The visible leak on the exposed pipe left no ambiguity about the source.

The repair was completed using 20mm MDPE pipe and two 25mm to 20mm transition fittings, replacing the failed metal pipe section. Post-repair testing confirmed the system was sound with no further escapes present.
