Symptoms
At a property in OX3, the water meter was observed to be continuously spinning even after the internal stopcock had been fully isolated. This behaviour indicated that water was escaping somewhere between the meter and the stopcock — a section of pipework that runs externally and is not controlled by the internal isolation valve.
The customer had no obvious signs of water surfacing above ground, making the source of the loss difficult to identify without specialist investigation.
A job of this kind falls squarely within water mains leak detection, where the challenge is not only confirming that a leak exists but pinpointing its precise location without unnecessary excavation. The fact that the meter continued to register flow despite the stopcock being closed gave a clear starting point: the leak was on the supply side, most likely in the external mains pipework running beneath the driveway.
Methods Used
The investigation began with a pressure test on the internal cold feed pipework, which passed cleanly and ruled out any leak inside the property. Attention then moved to the external main pipework, where a pressure test failed — providing direct evidence of a leak in that section.
Acoustic detection was deployed across the driveway surface to narrow down the location, identifying an anomaly at a specific point. The concrete driveway and underlying ground were carefully exposed at that location to allow visual confirmation.
This is a methodical approach typical of water mains leak detection work: isolate sections, test each under pressure, and use acoustic equipment to guide excavation only where the evidence points. The combination of pressure testing and acoustic correlation meant the dig was targeted rather than exploratory, and the source was confirmed on exposure.

Result & Outcome
Excavation at the acoustically identified point on the driveway exposed a leaking lead pipe in the external mains supply. The damaged section was cut out and replaced with 25mm MDPE pipe joined using UTC couplings and appropriate inserts — a standard, durable repair for this type of pipework. Following the repair, the system was held at 6 bar for 40 minutes and passed, confirming no residual loss.
For any water mains leak detection job where lead pipework is involved, the repair itself is only part of the picture. The remainder of the original lead supply pipe is still in place, and given its age and material, it carries an elevated risk of further failure. The water meter spinning continuously with the stopcock closed is a symptom that can recur if the remaining pipework is not addressed.
A copy of this report has been recommended for submission to the water board. It is also strongly advised that the remaining lead pipework be replaced as a precautionary measure.
