    About Hetton-le-hole

    Hetton-le-Hole is a town situated in the City of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England. It is the historic city of Durham. The unusual name of Hetton-le-Hole derives from two Anglo-Saxon words which were spelt together “Heppedun” or Bramble Hill, the words had several other variations, however the name gave rise to a local landowning family, the le Hepdons, who owned part of the Manor from the very earliest times.

    The town is known as the place where coal mining in East Durham began and also as the home of the Hetton Railway. Hetton-le-Hole, being a small town, offers a more peaceful atmosphere compared to the hustle and bustle of the big city as well as a number of amenities for its residents and visitors.

    Springboard Adventure

    Springboard Adventure is a scenic wooded site with lakes that offer a host of fun outdoor activities. Some activities you can do at the park include water-based activities, such as canoeing, kayaking, raft building, and white water tubing. There are also some land based activities that can be done at the park including mountain biking, orienteering, bushcraft, rock climbing, and abseiling.     Hetton Bog

    Hetton Bog is a local nature reserve situated in Broomhill Terrace at Hetton-le-Hole. The reserve comprises two main parts: the more formal Park and the wilder Bogs and Blackwood. The area features parkland and ancient woodland, wetlands, and wildflower meadows. Visitors to the nature reserve will also see a variety of mature trees such as sycamore, ash, oak, willow, and birch that provide habitat for birds and bats. It is highly recommended that you visit Hetton Bog’s wetlands and meadows during May and June as the areas at their best. Hetton Bog is open 24/7.
