    About Knottingley

    Knottingley is a town within the City of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England on the River Aire. The town’s name derives from the Old English personal name Cnotta, which means “knot”, which describes a small, round man, and -ingas “people” plus leah which means “wood, modern lee”.

    The town was known for glass manufacturing back in the 18th century. It was also the last town in the United Kingdom to have a working deep coal mine until it closed in December 2015. There are a number of shops, pubs, restaurants, and other amenities for residents and visitors.
