    About Leigh

Leigh is a town in Wigan, Great Manchester. Originally it was a centre of a huge parish covering six townships. Leigh started as a huge agricultural area. They later diversified into spinning and weaving. The remaining red brick mills tell the tale of the industrial past. The retail sector makes the majority of the present-day economy.

Leigh has some well-connected roads. The transport for Greater Manchester co-ordinates the public transport. Canals also give access to all parts of Lancashire from Leigh. Major landmarks in Leigh

    • Leigh Town Hall. The hall faces the parish church and was listed as a grade 2 building in 1987. The hall is now the new home for the borough’s archives. The ground floor is home to a new public search room.
    • Market cross. This structure is used to mark a market square in towns. These structures have no specific design and they range from crosses, obelisks or spires. A market cross represented the official site for a medieval village.
    • James Caldwell Prestwich. This is one of Prestwich’s surviving old buildings. It features a distinctive red-bricked look.
    • Accrington brick. These bricks were famed for their strength and endurance. Frederic street showcases houses built from these Accrington bricks.
